A hammock is built to move — that's the whole point of it — which is exactly why nothing borrowed from a table, a car, or a boat cup holder survives in one. A bed built to move since 1597

The hammock is one of the oldest pieces of furniture still used exactly as originally designed. The word comes from the Taino hamaca; Columbus recorded islanders sleeping in them around 1492, and the Royal Navy formally adopted them as standard shipboard bedding in 1597. Set anything with a narrow base on the fabric beside you and it doesn't stay where you put it — it slides down the slope toward the lowest point in the bed, which is wherever your weight is already pulling the fabric. The workarounds that already exist are their own kind of proof the problem is real — and each one runs into the same wall in a different place.

Ridgeline drink caddies — fabric sleeves hung by a Prusik knot, a slide-and-grip hitch built to be adjustable rather than fixed — only work on hammocks with a structural ridgeline to begin with, which rules out most backyard rope, spreader-bar, and stand setups.
